Getting advice on debt and money

If you need some guidance on managing your money, we can use our knowledge and experience to find you the support you need.

Here are some examples of the areas we cover:

  • What to do if you’re about to lose your home or can’t pay your rent
  • Getting out of debt
  • Managing credit cards or mortgages
  • Bankruptcy, Debt Arrangement Scheme, other debt options
  • How to set a budget - and stick to it

Haddington CAB is registered with and authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to provide a specialist money advice service.  The service is free, independent and confidential and we can offer advice and assistance on all aspects of money advice. Your (approved) money adviser can negotiate with Creditors, debt collection agencies, Sheriff Officers and other third parties on your behalf to set up and administer both formal and informal agreements including: moratoriums, token payments, voluntary repayment agreements, debt payment plans under the Debt Arrangement Scheme, personal bankruptcy applications and can also make referrals to other organisations where appropriate, including referrals to Insolvency Practitioners where a Trust Deed might be an option.

To enable us to provide appropriate advice, we need you to provide information and supporting documentation giving current and accurate details about your income and expenditure, all Creditors and debts, any assets you may have and any other relevant information.  We can then assess your case and look at all appropriate options.  We will identify any benefit entitlement and look at any other ways of maximising your income and we will also consider your expenditure and can provide budgeting advice if required.  We will explain all the options open to you, including the pros and cons of each to enable you to  make an informed decision as to how you wish to proceed.  We will only contact/negotiate with your Creditors on your behalf with your permission and we will keep you informed at all stages of the process.

Whatever type of money issues you’re facing, it’s important to remember - you don’t have to face this alone. We’re here to offer free, impartial and confidential support and guidance when you need it. Get in touch with Haddington Citizens Advice Bureau today.
